The Food Safety Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) revealed that almost 15% of protein powders, dietary supplements used by athletes and bodybuilders, are unsafe for consumption or substandard. In the survey conducted by the food regulator, they found that 4,890 out of 144,345 samples collected during 2021–22 were unsafe for consumption, and 16,582 were substandard. Meanwhile, an additional 11,482 samples were found to be defective with misleading information.
According to a representative of the agency, 4,946 criminal charges have been opened as a result of the survey′s results. Many academics and medical professionals have issued warnings about the dangerous protein powders that young people frequently consume to enhance muscle mass. They described how it can damage the heart, liver, and kidneys in addition to causing other health problems.
To control the manufacture and distribution of protein powders and other dietary supplements in India, the FSSAI has published particular regulations. The food regulator frequently conducts drives throughout states to check on operators in the food industry, including protein powder producers.
